Response to Literacy Observation

I really enjoyed this experience because I got to see how one teaches literacy to students. As I am in the gym all day, I don’t get to see a lot of quality classroom instruction and by observing a 6th grade language arts teacher teach a poetry lesson to students I got to see firsthand how having a strong grasp of the material can make a lesson more enthusiastic. When kids see that their teacher has a passion for their material, they are more likely to be engaged and learning. I witnessed the teacher using technology by giving her students the opportunity to research poems and topics for students to create their own work. Technology is something that I feel is vitally important for kids to be able to use, so it was good to see another teacher using it during the course of her lesson.

  1. After following your blog this semester, I liked how you were able to incorporate so many 21st century literacies in your classroom. Using teacher collaboration is critical in subjects that are considered resources.

  2. Nate, I could really appreciate two things from your blogs. First, your toolkit was exactly what the professor was looking for. While I understood the material, I took a different approach to my toolbox. Looking at your posts demonstrated your understanding of the material. Second, I thought your "radical" belief to allow students to find their way and answers was one of great importance. As I stated before, I think that too many times, educators get frustrated and want to hurry the child. When you mentioned that, I felt better and hopeful of all educators to believe in the student and find things that interest them! Good Luck.

  3. Nate, after reading your blog entries, it is clear that people in all areas 1) can teach literate practices, and 2) it is important to examine those practices outside of our own content areas! Go Army...

  4. A final response comment in reference to two good content literacy findings. The first one was when you said educators should incorporate dance into P.E classes and the second one was when you said educators should incorporate technology so students can listen to different music globally to culturally enrich students.

  5. Final Response- I learned that it would be very helpful to allow student discussion sessions to allow students to explain what they learned.
Using the internet to research a culture's type of dance is a great idea as well.

  7. I agree that students learn more from a subject when teachers are knowledeable and enjoy what they are doing. I think that's why it took me so long to get back because I didn' t have a passion for anyone subject. It was not until I came back and rekindled my love for English and reading that I found my content area.
